Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good and the Los Angeles Chargers might have struck gold with one of their tight ends.
The Chargers have seven tight ends on the roster who are fighting for at least three spots on the 53-man roster. Will Dissly and Tyler Conklin are expected to be the leaders on the depth chart, with rookie fifth-round pick Oronde Gadsden II lining up to be the third string.
It almost feels like there won't be much of a position battle during training camp at tight end, but an unlikely player could challenge for a spot despite the long shot.
Chargers fans, meet undrafted free agent Stevo Klotz
The Athletic's Chargers reporter, Daniel Popper, shared his Week 2 observations of OTAs for the team, listing 10 key points. Popper's last one was for fans to watch out for undrafted free agent tight end Stevo Klotz, who is a sleeper to make the roster.
"Keep an eye out for undrafted rookie tight end Stevo Klotz. He caught five passes in Tuesday’s team drills. There might not be a spot for him on the 53-man roster, but he feels like a lock for the practice squad, with the potential to make an impact as an elevation player during the season. Klotz is a solid blocker, which should show up when the pads come on next month. And he should also be a factor in special teams. Klotz was working on his long-snapping in the early stages of Tuesday’s practice."
Klotz didn't get many opportunities to catch the ball in college at Iowa State as he made just 15 receptions for 149 yards and two touchdowns in 39 games. He didn't get attention from NFL teams with his catching abilities, as he's an underrated blocker in the 2025 NFL Draft after he went unselected.
Also at tight end, Klotz will go up against McCallan Castles, Tucker Fisk, and Jordan Petaia. It's a crowded room that's going to be difficult to separate among all seven of them, but Klotz's name is out there now and fans will be keeping their eyes out for him.
Like Popper mentioned, it's unlikely that Klotz makes the final roster with how deep and competitive the tight ends are, but he could be making a case for the practice squad. That will give him time to continue learning from the other tight ends and eventually establish himself in the lineup.
OTAs are one thing, but Klotz has to perform well in the most essential place: training camp.
