Entering the 2026 offseason, the Los Angeles Chargers had enviable flexibility. They were in possession of the most cap space in the league after their cuts of Mekhi Becton and Will Dissly.
Given the number of holes they had across their roster, and especially on the offensive line, they certainly needed it.
While they were conservative, they did an excellent job filling those gaps. They added Tyler Biadasz before free agency even started, later signing Cole Strange and adding Jake Slaughter through the Draft to fill out their interior offensive line. They also added Charlie Kolar, Keaton Mitchell, and Alec Ingold as additional help on the offensive side of the ball.
They chose their route to solving their offensive issues under Mike McDaniel, and now they'll need to hope it proves to be the right one.
But in doing so, they left multiple veteran guards on the market, many of whom were frequently tied to the Chargers in the earlier portions of free agency. Many of those, including the 36-year-old Kevin Zeitler, still remain available as teams begin their offseason workouts.
Zeitler, however, could soon find his perfect fit. ESPN labeled the San Francisco 49ers as a strong match for Zeitler's services, and the veteran guard could get his lifeline from the Chargers' 2026 rival.
Kevin Zeitler's fit with the San Francisco 49ers makes perfect sense
At the end of the day, McDaniel knew what he wanted in his guards. Zeitler is a strong, physical presence, and he would have been a cheap and reliable addition for Los Angeles. Instead, the Chargers sought out more mobile, athletic guards, even if it came at the cost of dependability.
That doesn't mean that Zeitler doesn't have gas left in the tank, though. He allowed just 16 total pressures and four sacks on 590 pass-blocking snaps with the Tennessee Titans last season, per Pro Football Focus.
The 49ers, for their part, are in dire straits on the interior of their offensive line. Spencer Burford departed to the Las Vegas Raiders in free agency. San Francisco is now slated to start Dominick Puni, Jake Brendel, and Connor Colby along their interior.
The Chargers play the 49ers in Week 15 in what could prove to be a pivotal game. If Los Angeles exits their early-season gauntlet with six wins, their ability to win the AFC West will depend on them stringing together some victories between Weeks 11 and 16. As it stands, the Chargers' defensive line should have ample opportunity to feast in that matchup specifically.
But Zeitler's addition could help stabilize a room that's in desperate need of another veteran presence.
It's not likely the Chargers will regret spurning Zeitler this offseason. But he could soon make a major difference for a team Los Angeles needs to beat in 2026.
