The LA Chargers have been relatively quiet compared to expectations this offseason. While the Bolts have made some additions, the team has not taken the big swing that fans expected with more than enough cap space to do so.
It is clear the Chargers are being as calculated as possible this spring as the team looks to build on the foundation established last season. The Chargers are not going to go on a spending spree just to spend and that has become abundantly clear.
As the Chargers continue their measured offseason, there is one intriguing scenario that is sticking in the back of fans' minds. After seeing the success of the Detroit Lions the last two years, what if Jim Harbaugh looks to replicate one of the best duos in the NFL, Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery?
Believe it or not, there is a way for the Chargers to do that.
Chargers can recreate Lions' RB duo by drafting Ohio State's TreVeyon Henderson
Daniel Popper of The Athletic has been on this potential desire from Harbaugh to recreate Detroit's running back duo. Where there is smoke, there is fire, and if a team's beat reporter is talking about it then the desire is likely real.
Ohio State's TreVeyon Henderson is the most comparable back to Jahymr Gibbs in the 2025 NFL Draft with Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer even going as far as to say he could sneak into the first round for a team looking to find their version of Gibbs.
Running back may not be the most popular selection with the No. 22 pick, and Henderson may be considered a reach, but if the desire is strong enough then the Chargers very well could take the Buckeyes running back.
New signing Najee Harris would serve in the David Montgomery role for the Chargers. Harris would be the traditional between-the-tackles runner who gets short-yardage and goal-line opportunities. This aligns nicely with his skillset and keeps someone who has a career 3.9 yards per carry from being a true bellcow back.
Henderson has comparable skills to Gibbs as a running back. Gibbs was more refined coming into the league but Henderson has the same eye-popping athleticism and high ceiling in the passing game that will make him a dangerous weapon right away in the league.
Henderson's ability in the passing game is his strongest connection to Gibbs, and would be the most exciting part of his game for the Chargers. Not only is Henderson a lethal weapon as a pass-catcher but he is one of the better running backs in the class in pass pro. Essentially, he does all the things Harbaugh loves in a running back.
And it's not like Henderson is a slouch running the ball, either. Henderson split snaps with Quinshon Judkins at Ohio State, carrying the ball 144 times for 1,016 yards with 10 rushing touchdowns.
The first round might be a bit rich to take Henderson, especially if Michigan tight end Colston Loveland is on the board. But if the Chargers take Loveland at 22, and Henderson is still there at 55, then the team may have no other choice but to expedite the offensive rebuild with one of the most exciting running backs in the draft.
It has worked nicely for the Lions and with a much better quarterback under center, it may work out even better for the Chargers.
