Training camp is about to get underway for the LA Chargers and the team is doing its part in beefing up the roster. Before the pads get on and the players start running drills, the Chargers front office did its part to add offensive line depth.
The Chargers signed offensive tackle Ryan Nelson on Wednesday after he worked out with the team on Monday. Nelson clearly impressed the Chargers enough to get a training camp spot, which he now hopes to parlay into a practice squad spot.
Nelson is coming off an excellent season for the Michigan Panthers of the UFL. Nelson moved to tackle full-time last season and earned All-UFL honors for his efforts. Pro Football Focus gave Nelson a 77.5 overall grade with a 77.8 pass-blocking grade.
Chargers sign Ryan Nelson ahead of training camp
Nelson's path to making the Chargers' roster is an unlikely one but there is still potential in this signing. The Virginia grad was legitimately one of the best tackles in the UFL and that has to stand for something when it comes to his NFL prospects.
As it stands right now, Trey Pipkins is serving as the team's swing tackle with Jamaree Salyer serving as the fourth option (although he is a backup guard first). There is room for the Chargers to add another tackle to the depth chart with no clear favorite on the roster.
That may be unlikely for Nelson but it is possible. At the very least, Nelson has a chance to play well during training camp and the preseason to earn a spot on the Chargers' practice squad. There, Nelson could get an opportunity on the main roster if someone gets injured.
The Chargers have had recent success with pulling players from other professional leagues as well. Donald Parham is the best example as he went from being an XFL standout to being a legitimate fan favorite on the Chargers.
Of course, the hope is that Nelson never even has to play for the Chargers. If he does, that either Joe Alt or Rashawn Slater is out of action and the Bolts don't have another option. However, just because the best-case scenario is him not playing doesn't mean he won't add value.
There is value in having someone who thrived at a pro level at tackle who also has experience at guard. That kind of versatility can get you a lot of places in the NFL, and for Nelson, it may get him on the Chargers' practice squad.
Someone who most Chargers fans didn't know existed days ago is now one of the most compelling names to watch during training camp and the preseason. If Nelson continues his UFL form, he will soon be a name that most Chargers fans are aware of.
