Chargers' positive Ladd McConkey update leaves some hope for Week 6 matchup vs Chiefs

This may not be the Chargers' first win of the season, but having Ladd McConkey back certainly helps.

The Los Angeles Chargers, more than anything else, simply needed an injury development to break their way heading into their Week 6 matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs.

If the Chargers are going to have any chance at turning this season around—in any sense of the phrase—a win before their Week 7 bye would be a major development. Already being down their two starting tackles, their first, second, and third-string left guards, and a number of important playmakers on both sides of the ball, it was never going to be an easy task.

The Chargers' Friday injury report wasn't all good tidings, of course. There's still no update on the neck injury Joe Alt suffered in Week 4, and both Donte Jackson and Derwin James Jr. remain out for this matchup. But both Ladd McConkey and Quentin Johnston have officially been cleared off the injury report, and that's a massive boost for any semblance of cohesion Los Angeles may try to put together on the offensive side of the ball.

Ladd McConkey gives the Chargers a chance to put up a fight in Week 6

Granted, things didn't look great even with McConkey in the fold. The only stretch where McConkey—and arguably, the offense as a whole—was activated was the first drive of the season against the Arizona Cardinals.

Since that time, the offense has been full of miscues and mistakes, and with McConkey, Johnston, and Harris all out by the end of the Week 5 matchup with the Denver Broncos, Justin Herbert was left trying to rectify the situation with the likes of Marques Valdez-Scantling and Theo Wease Jr. running routes downfield.

McConkey suffered a rib injury in Week 1 that likely affected his play in Weeks 2 and 3, and he suffered a foot injury ahead of Week 5 that left him available only on an emergency basis on the sidelines.

The Chargers are currently the worst team in the league in EPA/play, and even with McConkey active and (presumably) at relatively full strength, this team needs more out of its complementary receivers in order to fully capitalize upon their underneath skill set of its primary pass catching threat. With Harris out for Week 6, that onus will fall upon Johnston.

The Chiefs, meanwhile, likely aren't the best team to hope for an offensive resurgence against. While they've largely faced weak offenses to this point in the season, they're still fifth in total passing yards against and eighth in total interceptions. Their offseason gambles on Mansoor Delane and Nohl Williams have paid dividends so far.

But this team, as constructed, is dead in the water without a YAC-centered pass catcher like McConkey in the fold. Perhaps having his favored target back can unlock something in Herbert as the Chargers enter another must-win game. At the very least, it gives the offense its primary weapon back, and that means there's at least some room to hope for a major upset in Week 6.
