Sometimes an offseason signing ages like fine wine; other times, it ages like spoiled milk. The quicker a team knows if a signing will work out the better, and the LA Chargers may have already learned all they need to know about cornerback Benjamin St-Juste.
St-Juste was one of two cornerbacks the Chargers signed this offseason, along with former Steelers defensive back Donte Jackson. Both cornerbacks were considered fliers for the Chargers with St-Juste having the more concerning past.
It's never a great sign when the fanbase of the team you just left openly cheers for your departure, and that is exactly what happened with Commanders fans and St-Juste. In just three preseason games, Chargers fans are already seeing why Commanders fans weren't bummed to see St-Juste walk.

Benjamin St-Juste may already be on the Chargers' chopping block
St-Juste was one-on-one in coverage against Rams seventh-roud pick Konata Mumpfield on the touchdown play above. And while it was a nice route run by the rookie, it's not a good look to get put in a blender by a seventh-round rookie.
This isn't just a one-off for St-Juste in the preseason, either. The former Commanders cornerback has been pretty bad in the snaps he has played throughout the preseason.
St-Juste didn't play in the Hall of Fame Game but did play six coverage snaps against the New Orleans Saints. Pro Football Focus gave St-Juste a 39.4 coverage grade for his efforts in that game. He was targeted once and allowed a 21-yard reception.
This wouldn't be a concern if St-Juste didn't have a concerning background prior to becoming a Charger. St-Juste was woeful for four seasons in Washington and is coming off a season where quarterbacks had a 114.5 passer rating when targeting him in the secondary.
Undrafted free agent Nikko Reed has been far more impressive in the preseason and has a case to make the roster over St-Juste. Heck, fellow UDFA Eric Rogers even has a case to make over St-Juste, although the injury he suffered against the Saints may keep that from happening.
It's not unfathomable for the Chargers to waive someone who they just signed in the spring. After all, the Chargers telegraphed that they weren't fully bought in on St-Juste with the contract they signed him to. St-Juste's deal was initially reported to be a $2.5 million deal but with only $1 million guaranteed, the Chargers can comfortably get out of his deal without thinking twice.
Will St-Juste actually get cut by the Chargers when the team trims the roster down to 53 players? Time will tell. The Chargers could ultimately be stubborn and want to see it out in the regular season since he was just signed.
But if the Chargers are truly pursuing the best players on the roster, St-Juste will inevitably be left out.
