Chargers OC Greg Roman's latest comments leave offensive line uncertain for SNF
Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator Greg Roman was asked about the state of the offensive line at his weekly Thursday media availability. Roman suggested that the offensive line had its' best game of the season on Sunday against the Titans.
While he suggested the blocking could be better on certain plays, it seems like he thought the process for the group was headed in the right direction.
With right guard Trey Pipkins injured and inactive against Tennessee, the Chargers opted to play both Jamaree Salyer and Foster Sarell. Sarell played 11 snaps while Salyer would go on to finish the game with the bulk of the snaps at 47.
Trey Pipkins (ankle) was back at practice in a limited capacity on Wednesday. The Athletic's Daniel Popper asked Roman if there was a competition at the right guard spot between Pipkins and Salyer:
"I think they've both shown that they can play at a winning level," Roman said of both Pipkins and Salyer. "So we'll see how that comes together. They're out there competing in practice and I think Salyer took a step forward last week with his performance."
Pipkins, for the most part, was not given competition at the right guard spot during the preseason process. This was despite not having a history of playing the position. Salyer, Foster Sarell, and others all competed for backup depth roles along the offensive line.
Statistically at least, Salyer did have his best performance of the season in his 47 snaps on Sunday. His 62.3 PFF pass blocking grade was his highest of the season. It was his first game of the season in which he played 15+ snaps without allowing a pass rush pressure. Pipkins has dealt with nagging injuries throughout the season before missing his first game of the year this past Sunday.
Hypothetically, the Chargers could undergo the same process as they did this week. Pipkins or Salyer could get the start while the Chargers adjust throughout the game based on performance. Perhaps Sarell would also be part of the rotation like he was this past week.
The Bengals come into this week 13th in pass rush win rate (43%) and 21st in run stop win rate (30%). Defense has been a question mark for Cincinnati all season long as they rank 26th in the NFL in scoring at 26.2 points per game allowed.
The Chargers' offensive line could look different as the Bolts face off against the Bengals on Sunday Night Football this week.
