Chargers' nightmare scenario could force DK Metcalf trade

A blockbuster move in the NFL may be on the horizon with DK Metcalf requesting a trade from the Seattle Seahawks. The LA Chargers reportedly tried to trade for Metcalf last offseason, which may set the stage for the Bolts to make a huge trade this offseason.

Opinions are split on whether or not it is worth it for the Chargers to trade the necessary draft capital for Metcalf this spring. While the Chargers undoubtedly need wide receiver help, Metcalf's price could be driven up with other contending teams in need of wide receiver help.

The competitive market for Metcalf serves as another reason for the Chargers to swing a trade. If the Chargers do not make a competitive push for Metcalf then it makes it easier for significant AFC teams to acquire the Pro Bowl wideout.

Chargers could trade for DK Metcalf to keep him away from Chiefs, Bills

The Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills have not been named among the theorized favorites for DK Metcalf, but they absolutely should be considered threats. Both teams have Super Bowl aspirations and could greatly use a top-tier wideout.

Kansas City and Buffalo are in similar situations this offseason. Both teams are currently over the salary cap threshold but have plenty of restructure potential to create space. Heck, the Chiefs have already restructured Patrick Mahomes' deal to create $21.6 million in cap space.

Both teams can fit Metcalf onto their salary books and have the means to pay him in the future. Kansas City has over $80 million in projected cap space in 2026 while Buffalo has $29.1 million (with several cut candidates to save even more space).

Metcalf joining either team would be bad news for the Chargers. Giving Mahomes or Josh Allen one of the most explosive wide receivers, who hasn't played with a quarterback that talented, is dangerous for every single AFC team looking to contend for the Super Bowl.

Potential suitors such as the Green Bay Packers and New England Patriots would not be as daunting but the Chargers may not want to take that chance. If the Chargers have intel that either AFC contender is in the market then the team's urgency will be kicked up a notch.

Ideally, the Chargers could trade for Metcalf without having to overpay and send first-round draft capital. In reality, this nightmare scenario will make the Bolts think twice about how much they are willing to trade.
