Chargers' most tantalizing matchup of 2026 is already taking shape

The Chargers and the Baltimore Ravens will face off in Week 10. It will represent more than their first shot at Jesse Minter.

The Los Angeles Chargers have plenty of intriguing matchups on the schedule in 2026.

They'll start the season with a pair of relatively easy matchups against the Arizona Cardinals and the Las Vegas Raiders. But beyond that, there's not really a single game that doesn't hold some sort of intrigue (apart from perhaps their Week 11 matchup against the New York Jets.)

They'll get their two early division-rival matchups against the Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos. They'll get their playoff rematch against the New England Patriots. They'll face the two best teams in the NFC in the Seattle Seahawks and the Los Angeles Rams. They'll even get a rare cross-state game against the San Francisco 49ers.

But in The Athletic's list of every team's must-watch game in 2026, Chargers writer Daniel Popper listed their Week 10 date with the Baltimore Ravens as their most intriguing game of the season, and for good reason.

Popper outlines the mentor-mentee storylines, between Jim Harbaugh and Jesse Minter and Minter and Chris O'Leary, as the primary reason for intrigue. But it goes even beyond that. If the Chargers make it through Week 9 with a solid record, their game against Baltimore could be absolutely pivotal to their playoff hopes.

Chargers' Week 10 matchup against the Baltimore Ravens could be their most important game of the season

In order to understand this game's importance in the schedule, it's necessary to contextualize it. After their relatively easy start to the season, Los Angeles will face matchups against the Buffalo Bills, Seahawks, Chiefs, and Broncos before an early bye week. After the bye, they will face the Los Angeles Rams, Houston Texans, and Ravens.

If they can exit that early stretch with at least six wins, they'll be in prime position for a Wild Card spot, or even to make a push for the AFC West, down the stretch. Let's say they lose two, or even three, of those games against their earlier opponents. (For the sake of argument, we'll say they come up short against the Seahawks and Rams). Winning that game against Baltimore, and entering the easier stretch of their season on a high note, will be absolutely pivotal.

The Ravens struggled in 2025 on both sides of the ball. They finished 16th in total offense and 24th in defensive yards allowed. But with Jesse Minter at the helm and ample talent available across the roster, Baltimore is poised for a major turnaround in 2026.

If Los Angeles can come away with a win against the Ravens, they'll then get a chance to string together a sizable winning streak, with matchups against the Jets, Patriots, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Raiders looming after Week 10. If they can't, the pressure on them will likely significantly increase, making the late-season divisional matchups must-win affairs.

The same goes for Baltimore. Although the Ravens have a much easier schedule, they have matchups with the Cincinnati Bengals, Buffalo Bills, and Jacksonville Jaguars preceding their Week 10 matchup with the Chargers. That could easily turn into a disastrous skid for Minter's team.

The storylines for that game, therefore, will likely extend far beyond the relationships between the two teams' coaching staffs and front offices. It will be a game that could have major implications for each teams' season, and it will come on Monday Night Football, no less.
