As we enter training camp, the Los Angeles Chargers have their fair share of potential rookie contributors to sort through.
Akheem Mesidor should have a role lined up complementing Tuli Tuipulotu and Khalil Mack in the pass rush. Jake Slaughter will be competing with Trevor Penning and Kayode Awosika for the starting left guard spot. Genesis Smith has a chance to make a real push for snaps at the third safety spot. Even UDFA Nadame Tucker will be a name to watch as he fights to displace either Kyle Kennard or Bud Dupree in the edge-rusher room.
But their most sneakily intriguing prospect— offensive tackle Isaiah World— was recently placed on the NFI (non-football injury) list as he continues to rehab the torn ACL he suffered in last year's College Football Playoff with Oregon.
He won't appear in training camp this year, taking his rookie season as a sort of 'redshirt' campaign. But that move indicates he'll likely stick with the Chargers through this season in some capacity, giving him a chance to make a splash when the roster is re-shuffled next year.
Isaiah World is still a name to watch— even if he won't be on the field
Even in the pre-draft process, World was a name that was connected to the Chargers, in part because of their deep ties to the University of Oregon.
Across 16 games during his final college season, World allowed just 11 pressures and one sack on 380 pass-blocking snaps, per Pro Football Focus. He certainly has strides to take in terms of his fundamental soundness and consistency on the edge of the line, but he has the formidable power and athleticism to be a real force at the NFL level when he's eventually healthy.
If it weren't for the injury, it's fair to assume World would've been a solid Day 2 pick. The Chargers were lucky to nab him post-Draft. They signed him to a near-record UDFA contract, guaranteeing $534,000 of his salary on his three-year deal.
By placing him on the NFI list, Los Angeles can keep World through this season without any pressure to place him on the 53-man roster.
Although the Chargers have a pair of star tackles in Joe Alt and Rashawn Slater, it's clear they're attempting to shore up their depth behind that pairing. They re-signed Trey Pipkins III this offseason on a two-year deal, and they also added Travis Burke out of Memphis in the fourth round of the 2026 NFL Draft.
Pipkins is cemented as the swing tackle at least through this season, but both Burke and World could make a push to replace him by the time we reach training camp in 2027. Releasing Pipkins after this campaign would only leave the Chargers with about $1.4 million in dead cap.
We won't see World in training camp, therefore, but the Chargers' decision to place him on the NFI list is the start of a storyline worth keeping in the back of mind between now and 2027.
