Chargers may have another weapon for Justin Herbert in waiting (but it's a risk)

As NFL free agency continues to unfold, the Los Angeles Chargers have the opportunity to gift Justin Herbert another productive veteran receiver.

The Los Angeles Chargers have an elite quarterback in Justin Herbert, and they have been motivated to put a competent team around him so that the franchise can contend for a title. That building process is currently ongoing, as the NFL works its way through free agency, and eventually to the NFL Draft. With a ton of veterans still available, the Chargers have the opportunity to give Herbert another weapon.

That weapon is free agent wide receiver Jauan Jennings. In a recent piece by Nick Shook, for NFL.com, Los Angeles was named as the best fit for veteran wideout. Shook emphasized that Jennings could be the perfect addition to the Chargers’ receiver room, especially since Keenan Allen hasn’t re-signed yet. However, if Los Angeles follows Shook’s advice and signs Jennings, Chargers fans can prepare to say goodbye to Keenan Allen again.

"The Chargers have plenty of reason to like Tre Harris… but with Keenan Allen still unsigned, they still have room for a veteran who can contribute. This is where we enter the NFL's leading heel in 2025, Jennings… I'd love to see him join a corps that also includes Quentin Johnston and Ladd McConkey, if for no reason other than I believe Justin Herbert would maximize Jennings' potential at this stage in his career."

Chargers named best fit for Jauan Jennings, but he could cost L.A. Keenan Allen

Jennings has spent his entire six year career with the San Francisco 49ers, after they drafted him in the seventh round of the 2020 Draft. The receiver was on San Francisco’s practice squad as a rookie, but developed into a contributing wideout by year two. Jennings emerged as a very good blocking receiver, and improved as a pass catcher each season.

His two most productive years came in the last two seasons, catching 77 passes for 975 yards and six touchdowns in 2024, and posting 55 receptions for 643 yards and nine touchdowns in 2025. Now, he could bring his talents to the Chargers, where there is a sense of familiarity for the receiver.

Los Angeles recently hired Mike McDaniel to be the team’s offensive coordinator, and McDaniel was with the 49ers for the first two years of Jennings’ career, including serving as his offensive coordinator in 2021. That could happen again in 2026 if Jennings joins the Chargers.

The veteran wideout is one of the best remaining free agents, so him not being signed yet likely has something to do with the kind of contract he’s looking for versus what teams are offering him. If Jennings and the Chargers can agree on numbers, it’d be a partnership that makes sense for both sides.
