The LA Chargers have an abundance of resources to use this offseason to build on the foundation Jim Harbaugh built in 2024. With ample money to spend, the Chargers can bring in several impactful free agents to fill the holes on the roster.
Free agency isn't always about addressing the weakest areas of the roster, it can also be used to bolster strengths as well. The Chargers can do that with Jesse Minter's defensive line by re-signing key free agents and bringing in external help as the icing on the cake.
One free agent who would be perfect on the Chargers' defensive line is Philadelphia's own, Milton Williams. Williams is fresh off a Super Bowl-winning season with the Eagles in which he played a huge part.
Unfortunately, despite the Chargers' monetary resources, Williams' price may be higher than the team can spend after the Eagles' Super Bowl run. Eagles insider Eliot Shorr-Parks claimed that Williams will get in the ballpark of a three-year, $60 million contract with as much as $35 million guaranteed.
Milton Williams may price himself away from the Chargers in free agency
The Chargers can theoretically afford to add Williams at that price point but the team's resources might be better off used elsewhere. Los Angeles needs to find a new starting center and right guard, as well as bolster the offense at wide receiver and tight end.
Williams does have a lot of potential as a pass-rushing interior defensive lineman, especially considering Morgan Fox is hitting free agency. The Eagles' defensive linemad sported a 17.7% pass-rush win rate this season, which was the third-highest of any interior defensive lineman with at least 300 pass-rushing snaps.
The holes in Williams' game as a run defender do not matter when he can put together elite pass-rushing numbers. Teams are lining up for players who can put pressure on the quarterback and collapse the pocket. Williams can do that.
Thankfully for the Chargers, there are other ways to beef up the defensive line this offseason. Re-signing Poona Ford and Teair Tart is already a great start. From there, the Chargers could look for another bargain interior pass rusher like Morgan Fox, or could even use the early rounds of the 2025 NFL Draft.
Williams may be a great addition on paper for the Chargers but he is not the only option. It would be one thing if there were not many other great options, like the tight end position. But in this case, the Chargers have the means to make it work with or without Williams.
In a perfect world, these estimations will end up being too high and the Chargers will have a chance to re-sign Williams at a manageable price. If not, it's not the end of the world.
