Chargers offensive lineman Jamaree Salyer has left the building in free agency. The Miami Dolphins officially announced that they signed the former Bolts’ swing tackle. Los Angeles was able to retain Trey Pipkins and Trevor Penning as depth earlier on in free agency. They also signed G Cole Strange away from Miami.
Salyer played at both the guard and tackle spots in his four seasons with Los Angeles. However, he is best known for stepping into the left tackle spot admirably due to injuries on the starting line. Salyer played left tackle after Rashawn Slater tore his biceps tendon in 2022. In 2025, the Chargers suffered season-ending injuries to both Slater and Joe Alt. Pipkins also dealt with injuries throughout the season. Without Salyer’s stability at left tackle in either of those seasons, the Chargers arguably don’t make the playoffs.
The Chargers have to keep adding to the offensive line to make up for lost talent.
When playing tackle for the Chargers last season, Salyer allowed just two sacks and 14 pressures. He showed a lot of growth and development throughout the season at the position. Salyer’s guard reps were less promising earlier on in the year, but it’s worth noting that he slimmed down quite a bit before the season. Considering his Chargers tenure as a whole, tackle was definitely his best position.
Pipkins or Penning will likely step into the swing tackle spot now that they got paid their respective depth/backup tier contracts. Pipkins held the spot in training camp before an injury to Slater forced him into the starting lineup.
Mike McDaniel’s offensive line revamp in Los Angeles continues. The Chargers will likely remain on the lookout for starting guards in the second wave of free agency as names like Joel Bitonio or Wyatt Teller are on the market. Outside of that, the Chargers will also have the draft to replace some of the talent they’ve lost like Salyer and starting LG Zion Johnson.
The Chargers have just six starting linemen right now who would be guaranteed a roster spot in Slater, Alt, C Tyler Biadasz, Pipkins, Penning, and Strange. OG Ben Cleveland, C Josh Kalltenberger and T/G prospect Branson Taylor are on futures contracts with the team.
Salyer was dependable as a swing tackle and positively impacted two Chargers’ playoff campaigns by stepping in. For now, LA hopes they can get the same production out of Penning or Pipkins if an injury on the top line were to happen again.
