Chargers' looming extensions give them one option in a Christian Gonzalez sweepstakes

Donte Jackson, Tarheeb Still, and Cam Hart will all need new contracts in the near future. If Christian Gonzalez is truly available, the Chargers at least have to make the call.

It's reasonable to be wary when the Los Angeles Chargers are tied to any major trade target. Joe Hortiz is one of the NFL's most conservative general managers, and he's clearly established a preference to build sustainably through the Draft and free agency rather than sacrifice major capital for established stars.

We saw it with the A.J. Brown trade this summer. Although Los Angeles was reportedly on the list of teams Brown was interested in, it remains unclear how far the Chargers were willing to go for a deal (if they even entered the fray at all). They were never serious contenders for Brown's services, and now he's arrived with the New England Patriots to try to augment their budding offense.

The Patriots' recent splurges, however, may have opened up a major trade opportunity for the Chargers— and there's a serious case to be made that they should actually be in on it.

Star cornerback Christian Gonzalez and New England have yet to reach an agreement on a massive, long-term extension for 2027 as the team enters training camp. While the Patriots haven't publicly indicated any interest in moving off of Gonzalez, it could be the sort of move that propels a team like the Chargers into true Super Bowl contention.

Given Los Angeles' uncertainties at the position and their long-term financial flexibility, Gonzalez is a trade candidate they should absolutely be checking in on.

Christian Gonzalez could be the long-term centerpiece for the Chargers' secondary

While the Patriots have already inked Gonzalez's fifth-year option, both parties are looking to get a long-term extension put together before the start of the 2026 season. The problem lies in Gonzalez's market and New England's general willingness to hand out market-setting contracts.

The current highest contract for a cornerback was handed out to Trent McDuffie by the Los Angeles Rams this offseason. McDuffie's four-year, $124 million deal will extend through the end of 2030. It's reasonable to expect that Gonzalez's deal will surpass that.

Even if it does, it will be more than worth it. Over the course of his rookie contract, Gonzalez has been one of the premier coverage corners in the entire NFL. Per Pro Football Focus, Gonzalez had seven PBUs and just one missed tackle across 480 coverage snaps in 2025. If Gonzalez and the Patriots aren't able to reach an agreement, the price for him would still be hefty.

But given the Chargers' uncertainties at the position, it's one they should consider paying. Donte Jackson, who took on significant duties in the Los Angeles secondary last season, is likely slated to depart in free agency next offseason. Their other two starting corners, Tarheeb Still and Cam Hart, will both come due for extensions next offseason as well.

As of now, the most likely scenario is that Los Angeles spends high-leverage capital to bring in a cornerback through the Draft. But it's rare that a corner of Gonzalez's caliber becomes available.

The Chargers have found success recycling talent in the secondary under Jesse Minter. But if they want long-term stability, a trade for Gonzalez is something they should explore, hands-down.
