Philip Rivers is the greatest quarterback in LA Chargers history and has turned his focus to mentoring the next wave of football players. Since his retirement in 2021, Rivers has coached the St. Michael Catholic High School football team.

Rivers has brought success to the St. Michael Catholic program in a short amount of time. Under Rivers' tutelage, the Cardinals went from not being a playoff team to reaching the semi-finals of the Division 4A Alabama state playoffs this past season.

Leading the way for St. Michael Catholic under center is Rivers' son, Gunner Rivers, who was a sophomore this past high school football season. Even with two years of high school remaining, Gunner Rivers is already starting to follow in his dad's footsteps, as he received his second offer from a big football program as a sophomore.

Philip Rivers' alma mater North Carolina State offered Gunner Rivers a scholarship last May. Now in 2025, Gunner Rivers has also received an offer from Auburn.

Gunner Rivers may be following in Philip Rivers footsteps

While most of the attention on quarterback families has been on Archie Manning and the rest of his family, Gunner Rivers is a name football fans will know all too well in no time.

Gunner Rivers is part of the 2027 high school class and is already ranked highly among his peers. He is currently ranked 64th in the nation and is the eighth-ranked quarterback on 247Sports. With two more years to play under his father, there is plenty of room for Gunner Rivers to grow.

Gunner Rivers completed 63% of his passes for 3,947 yards and 39 touchdowns in 14 games as a sophomore. According to MaxPreps, Gunner Rivers is already six-foot-three and 195 pounds. All signs are pointing to him being a legitimate college prospect, and if it all comes together, potentially being a draft prospect.

It is way too early to predict what kind of NFL Draft prospect Gunner Rivers will be but he will be eligible for the 2030 NFL Draft. Justin Herbert will only be 32 by the time the 2030 NFL Draft rolls around, so the Chargers likely won't be in the market for a quarterback.

Anything can happen, though, and Gunner Rivers could continue to follow in his dad's footsteps if the stars align.

The Chargers may not be in the market for a starting quarterback in 2030 but they could be in the market for a backup. If that is the case, and Gunner Rivers is a late-round prospect, then the prophecy could be fulfilled.
