Chargers' HC Jim Harbaugh offers no reprieve after latest Joey Bosa injury scare
By Jason Reed
The LA Chargers dominantly defeated the New Orleans Saints on Sunday but it was not all good for the Bolts. Joey Bosa returned to action on a snap count after dealing with what he called the most painful injury of his career. Unfortunately, Bosa was unable to make it the entire game without giving Chargers fans a scare.
Bosa, who logged his first-ever game with zero quarterback pressures and at least 10 pass-rushing snaps, was seen kneeling on the sideline with the Chargers training staff attending to him in the third quarter. On tape, it appeared that Bosa aggravated the hip injury that has kept him out of action in recent weeks. The former Ohio State Buckeye did not return to the game.
Given Bosa's injury history and the sheer number of games he has missed in recent years, there was obvious concern about Bosa's long-term health. Unfortunately for Chargers fans, there were no answers from head coach Jim Harbaugh during his media availability on Monday.
Jim Harbaugh provides no update for Chargers' Joey Bosa
Chargers fans likely won't get the entire picture either until Bosa himself speaks to reporters or until the injury report for Week 9 is released on Friday. Until then, there will be plenty of speculation around Bosa's health.
It would be genuinely shocking if Bosa were a full participant in practice based on how the Chargers have operated. And as Chargers fans know all too well, Harbaugh is not going to provide updates on how Bosa is feeling or how far along he is.
Bosa missing any more time would be a dagger for both him and the Chargers. The former third-overall pick has already missed three games this season and when he has played he has not played often.
The only game in which Bosa logged more than 20 snaps was Week 1 against the Las Vegas Raiders. In Week 2 he logged 14 defensive snaps (29% of the total), in Week 3 he logged two defensive snaps (3%) and in Week 4 he logged 20 defensive snaps.
Bosa has missed 23 total games over the last three seasons, meaning he has only played in 43.9% of the Chargers' games. Some of those appearances hardly count as appearances, too, such as his Week 3 outing where he played two total snaps.
Chargers fans no longer believe in Bosa's ability to stay healthy and it is raising questions about the team's offseason decisions. Los Angeles chose to keep Bosa over fan-favorite wide receiver Keenan Allen. This decision looks worse and worse the more time Bosa misses.
Hopefully, Bosa's injury scare in Week 8 was only that: a scare. But given his track record, it isn't unfair to think Bosa will be on the shelf yet again.
