Much to the dismay of fans, the LA Chargers did not claim any players off waivers after Tuesday's roster cutdown. In fact, the Chargers actually lost three players to waivers, one of which being fan-favorite running back Raheim Sanders.
Wednesday isn't the only day the Chargers can claim players off waivers as other talented players will be cut in the coming days. In fact, the Chargers may have already found their target as one notable name with ties to Jim Harbaugh was waived Wednesday.
The Philadelphia Eagles surprisingly waived 2024 fifth-round pick Trevor Keegan on Wednesday. The 24-year-old guard, who turns 25 on the last day of August, played just one game with the Eagles last season. Even with a small NFL sample size, Keegan could ake a lot of sense for the Bolts.
Trevor Keegan could be a great Chargers waiver claim after Eagles release
Keegan played for Harbaugh at the University of Michigan, which alone might be enough for the Chargers to take a swing. After all, Hassan Haskins was signed last season and kept on this year's 53-man roster mostly due to his Michigan connection with Harbaugh.
It goes deeper than just the Michigan connection, though. Keegan would also provide much-needed offensive line depth for a Chargers team that is struggling to find that. Los Angeles traded draft capital for Austin Delucas to serve as the swing tackle. With Keegan, the Bolts could get valuable interior offensive line depth.
Keegan may have a limited track record in the NFL but there are still reasons to be excited. The former Wolverine did not allow a single sack in 2023 under Harbaugh, which is certainly something the Chargers head coach remembers in 2025.
The second-year guard also had a serviceable preseason. While it was not elite, Keegan allowed two pressures in 52 pass-blocking snaps this preseason. That's not elite, but it's really good for a backup guard who would be an emergency option.
It's rare that a young offensive lineman with upside hits the market. It's even rarer when that offensive lineman has a direct line to the head coach. If there is any coach that can get the most out of Keegan it's Harbaugh and that alone makes this pairing too enticing to ignore.
The Chargers would be doing a disservice to not add more firepower to protect Justin Herbert in 2025 and beyond. Keegan won't completely fix the offensive line, but he would provide depth that the team desperately needs.
