Even after the 2025 season ended in disappointing fashion for the Los Angeles Chargers, hopes for the team were sky high.
The Chargers had ample cap space to spend, allowing them the financial flexibility they would need to make major changes to the roster. With the firing of Greg Roman and the hiring of Mike McDaniel, the offense seemed poised for a major turnaround. Even Jesse Minter's departure was offset by the hiring of Chris O'Leary, who should be able to maintain schematic continuity next season.
Before the season had even truly come to an end, Los Angeles seemed to have set itself up well to have a head-turning offseason. It was time, simply, to execute.
Their signing of Khalil Mack to a one-year contract extension on Saturday night is another step in that direction.

Khalil Mack's return seemed in doubt for a moment, but his signing is the best thing that could have happened to the Chargers
Before free agency's even started, the Chargers have made a trio of necessary moves to bolster their roster for next season. The Tyler Biadasz signing and the ERFA tender given to Kimani Vidal helped fill two major positions of need.
But neither of these signings is more pleasing from a fan's perspective than Mack's. Across 62 games with Los Angeles, Mack has been a highly disruptive pass rusher, totaling 36.5 sacks, 45 tackles for loss, and 60 QB hits in that span. Although his impact faded a bit last season, he was as important as ever to the Chargers' defensive front.
The duo of Mack and Tuli Tuipulotu was not sufficient for the early part of the season. But upon the addition of Odafe Oweh via mid-season trade, their trio of pass rushers quickly became one of the most formidable in the league.
There was reason to have doubt about Mack's return when he stated he would explore all his options this offseason. But the Chargers always seemed to be the most likely destination as long as they decided to leverage their cap space to bring him back.
The work is not done. Oweh and Zion Johnson both remain free agents. It's quite possible both of their markets exceed $20 million per year. But bringing Mack back at $18 million, which is the confirmed total on his one-year extension per Jeremy Fowler, was a no-brainer.
It's hard not to be pleased with what Los Angeles has already accomplished this offseason. Free agency starts on Wednesday, and they've already set themselves up well to balance maintaining continuity and re-imagining of their roster.
The Mack signing is simply another step along that tenuous path.
