Rodney Harrison is one of the best safeties to ever put on a jersey for the LA Chargers. Yet for some reason or another, he has never been inducted into the team's Hall of Fame. That all changed on Monday.
The Chargers announced that Harrison will officially be inducted into the team's Hall of Fame this upcoming season. Los Angeles will honor Harrison during the team's Week 8 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings.
Harrison's induction ceremony will happen during halftime of the team's Thursday Night Football game.
Rodney Harrison's Chargers Hall of Fame induction was long overdue
Drafted in the fifth round of the 1994 NFL Draft, Harrison is one of the biggest success stories in franchise history. He spent nine years with the Chargers and turned himself into one of the best safeties in the league during his time in San Diego.
Harrison was named to two Pro Bowls teams in addition to a First-Team All-Pro nod (the first of his career, the second of which came with the New England Patriots).
Harrison is fifth in Chargers history in solo tackles and third in interceptions. He and Woodrow Lowe are the only two players in franchise history to have at least 20 sacks and 20 interceptions while wearing the powder blue.
If Harrison spent his entire career with the Chargers then he would have already been in the team's Hall of Fame. However, after nine seasons with the Bolts he left for the New England Patriots, where he would spent six seasons with two championships.
Harrison has said some not-so-nice things about the Chargers and the team's ownership since his playing days, which may have delayed his induction into the team's Hall of Fame. Things have seemingly smoothed over and Harrison is now receiving an honor that has been long overdue.
The former Chargers' safety is the 36th player and 44th person to be inducted into the Chargers Hall of Fame. He is also the first safety to ever be inducted. He shouldn't be the last, as the next player the Chargers need to smooth things over with is Eric Weddle.
