The LA Chargers questionably allowed standout defensive tackle Poona Ford to sign with the LA Rams on a cost-effective contract this offseason. Despite having ample cap space to bring Ford back, the Chargers believe they can replace his impact with the game of numbers.
Whether or not the Chargers can actually do that remains to be seen. One thing is for certain, though: an already stout Rams defensive line is going to be even better in 2025 with Ford playing nose tackle.
The Chargers will get one of the first looks at this defensive line as Ford makes his return to the Chargers facility much sooner than expected. It was officially announced on Wednesday that the Chargers are hosting the Rams for a joint practice starting on August 13.
Poona Ford will see the Chargers during training camp as part of joint practice with Rams
The Chargers only have one joint practice this year as the team has an extra preseason game as part of the Hall of Fame game. Traditionally, the Chargers have also held joint practices with the New Orleans Saints, who are spending over a week in Southern California during training camp.
However, the Chargers aren't going to get a chance to see Brandon Staley, Kellen Moore and the Saints in a more intimate practice setting. The team will, though, see Ford just months after letting him walk with the Rams.
Thankfully, the Chargers do not have to square off against this defensive line at full speed. The Rams' front seven is going to be menacing and would be a nightmare matchup against an interior offensive line that still has question marks surrounding it.
However, getting to see the familiar face in Ford, along with his new teammates, may send a wake-up call to the Chargers. Not only will it showcase why Ford should have been re-signed, but it may shine a spotlight on a real weakness for the Bolts.
It will be interesting to see what kind of energy Ford brings against his old team in practice. While there is undoubtedly a level of appreciation for giving him the platform to elevate his game, there likely will also be a chip on his shoulder against his former club.
