Chargers draw a brutal card with confirmed date for Patrick Mahomes revenge game

Chargers will face the Chiefs coming off a bye in Week 6. It will be their first chance to prove themselves as true contenders for the AFC West title, but Patrick Mahomes will be seeking revenge.

The Los Angeles Chargers weren't exactly granted favorable status by the NFL with their 2026 schedule.

They'll start the season with a pair of home games against the Arizona Cardinals and the Las Vegas Raiders, which should give the offense time to find their footing under a new scheme. But after that, they're slated for a seven-game gauntlet, separated by their bye week, that will feature matchups against the Buffalo Bills, Seattle Seahawks, Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Rams, Houston Texans, and Baltimore Ravens.

Each of these games will present their own unique challenges. You have potent offenses in the Bills and Rams, along with formidable defenses in the Seahawks and Texans. But perhaps the toughest and most pivotal of these matchups will come in Week 6 against Kansas City.

They'll be playing the Chiefs coming off of their early bye, and Kansas City's schedule prior to their matchup is almost incomparably easy. It's not necessarily a reason for despair— these are the types of games you have to win if you want to be considered among the NFL's elite.

But considering the context, including the chance for revenge on Patrick Mahomes' part after Los Angeles ended their season last year, it could be the Chargers' most difficult matchup of the season.

Chargers' Week 6 matchup with the Chiefs should be one of their most highly-anticipated of the season

There's ample reason to be optimistic about the Chargers coming into 2026. They've reshaped much of their offense, and there's a serious chance this unit is one of the scariest in the NFL by the time we reach Week 5 or 6.

The Chiefs, though, have similar reason for optimism. They made major offensive additions this offseason, bringing in reigning Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III through free agency and adding a trio of defensive contributors through the Draft. Mahomes, who tore his ACL in Week 15 against Los Angeles last season, appears slated to make a Week 1 return.

It will certainly take him some time to acclimate back into the offense. If the Chargers had landed their first date with Kansas City earlier in the season, they would've been better-poised to take advantage of a Chiefs team still getting their feet under them after a 6-11 finish in 2025. But Kansas City's pre-bye matchups will feature the Broncos, Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins, and the Raiders. They'll have 14 days of rest coming into their home matchup with the Chargers.

That should give Mahomes and company plenty of time to prepare for what, at that point, will likely be their biggest matchup of the season. Both of these teams will be vying to wrestle control of the AFC West from the Denver Broncos, and this matchup could prove to be absolutely pivotal for either side.

It's far from a guaranteed loss, but it's certainly one of many difficult spots the NFL has put the Chargers in with their 2026 slate.
