Trey Pipkins transitioned from tackle to guard in 2024 and the move did not go as planned. As a result, the LA Chargers signed former Philadelphia Eagles guard Mekhi Becton to start at right guard in place of Pipkins.

Many assumed the Chargers would cut Pipkins because of the salary-cap space it would save. Paying premium money for a backup offensive lineman is not something many teams do across the NFL.

However, because of his positional versatility and the fact he is on an expiring deal, the Chargers opted not to cut Pipkins during free agency. Pipkins remained on the team heading into the 2025 NFL Draft, slotting in as the team's swing tackle and a "break glass in case of emergency" guard option.

While Pipkins' spot is likely secure in 2025, the Chargers utilized one of their picks in the draft to find a long-term replacement. WIth the No. 199 pick in the draft, the Chargers selected Pitt offensive lineman Branson Taylor.

Taylor played tackle at Penn but is projected to move inside because of his size and skill set. This is a classic case of the Chargers landing a tackle prospect who fell because of intangibles despite having the baseline talent to succeed.

This is exactly how the Chargers ended up with Jamaree Salyer, who put together one of the most impressive (and unexpected) rookie seasons when filling in for Rashawn Slater in 2022. That's not to say that Taylor is guaranteed to be just as good as Salyer, but it is proof that this strategy works.

In a perfect world, Taylor won't just be limited to the inside and could blossom into being the Chargers' swing tackle once Pipkins inevitably leaves after the 2025 season. He may not project to be a starting-caliber tackle but he has the experience to be a valuable depth piece.

Versatility is the most valuable thing a depth offensive lineman can have and Taylor has that. His experience playing tackle mixed with his likely move to guard in 2025 will make him a valuable depth member of the Chargers' offensive line.

Pipkins may have gotten the benefit of the doubt to stick around for one more season but with Taylor on the roster, his destiny is guaranteed.
