Chargers' Derwin James shoots his shot at Tee Higgins before free agency

The LA Chargers have several offseason needs they need to address if they are going to make the leap from being a playoff participant to a true Super Bowl contender. Jim Harbaugh laid an excellent foundation in his first season. Now, it is time for the Bolts to build on it.

One of the most pressing needs for the Chargers is the wide receiver position. The Chargers had no real secondary weapon that could consistently get open alongside Ladd McConkey. This limited the Chargers' offensive ceiling and was on full display in the team's blowout loss in the AFC Wild Card Round.

Chargers fans are desperate to see the team add a wideout with Pro Bowler Tee Higgins at the top of the wish list. Fans are not the only ones who are desperate, though, as All-Pro safety Derwin James made it pretty clear how badly he wants the Bolts to bring in Higgins (or any receiver, for that matter).

"Hey, what's up, Tee," James said on "The Edge with Micah Parsons". "Tee, or any receiver out there, what's up? What's happening? Let's go do it."

Derwin James wants Tee Higgins (or "any receiver") to join the Chargers

James sounds just like every Chargers fan as he is openly asking Higgins to join the team this offseason. Higgins is by far the best receiver available in free agency and would level up the Chargers offense in a significant way if he were to sign.

Any team in the league would benefit from adding Higgins this offseason. The real desperation in James' answer is asking "any receiver" to come to Los Angeles next season. That highlights just how much wideout help the Bolts need in 2025 when a star player is outright begging for help wherever he can get it.

That help could come via a familiar face in Keenan Allen, who James outright told to come back to the Chargers on social media. It may also come via Cooper Kupp, who is now on the trade market but comes with inherent injury risks at an elevated salary.

Whether it's a massive free-agent signing, a reunion with an old friend, a trade, or even in the NFL Draft, the fact of the matter is the Chargers need wide receiver help. Fans know it, Derwin James knows it, and the Chargers know it. McConkey is special but he alone cannot carry the weight of the entire Chargers passing offense.

Hopefully, James' open call for every wide receiver who could potentially help the Chargers ends up foreshadowing a savvy move for the Bolts this offseason. If not, it will be impossible to take the Chargers serious as a true Super Bowl contender.
