Chargers coach's tone-deaf comment instantly ages poorly vs. Saints
By Jason Reed
The LA Chargers have not garnered any offensive momentum in 2024 despite having an elite quarterback under center. With subpar passing weapons and an offensive coordinator who runs a dated offense, the Chargers have taken a massive step back on the offensive side of the ball.
Roman spoke to reporters after Week 7's stinker that saw the Chargers waste an elite Justin Herbert performance with no touchdowns. The offensive coordinator shouldered the blame for the struggling offense, which is what fans wanted to hear.
However, Roman had one very interesting line from his press conference that was picked up by Chargers fans and ran with. While Roman acknowledged that the goal is to score on every drive, he also said that sometimes "punts are good". Reminder: you do not score points if you punt the ball.
In classic football fashion, Roman's comment instantly aged poorly in the Chargers' Week 8 game against the New Orleans Saints. Los Angeles started the game with two consecutive three-and-outs. The snap on the second punt went array, allowing the ball to trickle into the endzone for a Saints safety.
Greg Roman's punt comments aged as poorly as his game plan for the Chargers' offense
Sometimes punts are good.
We understand what coach was trying to say. There are certain circumstances when a team is protecting a lead that it is better to bury the opponent deep in their own territory rather than take an unnecessary risk that can swing the game.
However, Roman has to have more self-awareness considering everything that is going on. Roman has piloted one of the worst, and definitely the most disappointing, offenses in the entire sport. The last thing you should do when that is the case is go out and tell fans that sometimes punts are good.
With the current state of the Chargers' offense, there needs to be an added emphasis on scoring as many points as possible. Yes, sometimes punts can be beneficial over the course of the game, but a team that didn't even score a touchdown last week shouldn't be talking about how important punts can be.
There is no doubt that Roman regrets his choice of words after seeing what happened on the second punt of the game. And if the Chargers' offense is unable to turn it around, his seat as the team's offensive coordinator is only going to get warmer.
