LA Chargers fans don't ask for much. They just want the tea to spend when it has the money, especially when there is a big-name player that hits the market for cheap. That is exactly why Bolts fans wanted to see the team go after former Green Bay Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander.
Unfortunately, Alexander did not follow in Casey Hayward's footsteps in going from the Packers to the Chargers. Instead, he signed with a team the Chargers have immense ties to thanks to general manager Joe Hortiz: the Baltimore Ravens.
Alexander signed a one-year, $4 million deal with the Ravens. The former Pro Bowl corner can earn up to $6 million if he hits all his incentives. At this price, it's worth questioning if the Chargers were at all interested, or if Alexander simply picked the Ravens over the Bolts.
Ravens crush Chargers fans' Jaire Alexander dreams
It's unclear whether or not the Chargers were actually in the market for Alexander but they should have been. While there is inherent risk in bringing him in, the upside absolutely would have been worth the reasonable contract commitment.
It wasn't that long ago that Alexander was one of the best cornerbacks in the league. While the last two years have been dicey because of injuries, sometimes all it takes for a cornerback to return to form is a change of scenery and a clean bill of health.
The Chargers don't need Alexander to have a great secondary in 2025 but that is what would have made him so perfect. If he returned to form, he could have elevated an already talented group into being one of the best in the league. If he didn't work out, the Chargers had other options.
Second-year corners Tarheeb Still and Cam Hart are both special players who will lead the room in 2025. Behind them are multiple fliers, including Benjamin St-Juste and Donte Jackson, who may work out like Kristian Fulton did but also may flame out and hurt the Chargers.
Why not take another flier, especially one that has a much higher ceiling than the two fliers already on the team? The Chargers can get out of St-Juste's contract with ease before the season starts if he continues to struggle. Every Chargers fan in the world would rather take the flier on Alexander.
But alas, it was not meant to be. The same team that Hortiz has taken resources from time after time since coming to Los Angeles is the same team that will keep Alexander from donning the powder blue.
