Brenen Thompson continues to justify the hype at Day 2 of Chargers training camp

Brenen Thompson's status was a bit of a question mark heading into this training camp period. Thompson had an early exit from mandatory minicamp as he was seemingly injured on the first day. The Mississippi State product left the field with trainers back in June.

But so far in training camp, there have been no issues. In fact, it's the opposite. It's been the Brenen Thompson show at The Bolt through two days. Highlight play after highlight play, he's making it happen-and people are noticing.

On the first day of training camp, Thompson had multiple catches. His collection of grabs that day included a sliding catch from QB Justin Herbert:

Herbert spoke highly of Thompson after practice. "He's going to be very good," Herbert said of Thompson. "We saw it early on that he's skilled, he's fast, he's going to make a lot of plays for us. So I'm really excited for him."

Thompson was back at it again on the second day of training camp at The Bolt. Via ESPN's Kris Rhim, the rookie was amongst a group of receivers that stood out today along with Quentin Johnston and Ladd McConkey.

For the second day in a row, Herbert specifically found him deep again:

Chargers OC Mike McDaniel reportedly missed practice today in order to attend a funeral. But one has to imagine the Los Angeles' offensive staff loves what they're seeing from Thompson early. Playing time will always be a question mark as McDaniel's offenses tend to use zero to two receivers on the field at a time more often than say three to four. But if a player like Thompson keeps showing out, he'll keep earning some leeway.

Generally, you don't want to overreact and do excess training camp hype for receiving targets prior to the preseason. But the specific 4.3 speed Thompson can bring to the table in McDaniel's offense gives the coaching staff a lot to think about in terms of playing time. McConkey, Johnston, and Tre' Harris will all find their time on the field as well. So far, Thompson is proving why he belongs in that rotation.

Most importantly, Thompson's time as a true X receiver at his size in the SEC gives me confidence that he's much more than a speedster one trick draft pony. The NFL will test Thompson's lack of size early, but this is a prospect who should have the ability to overcome that.
