Anthony Lynn's tenure with the LA Chargers did not end on a great note. Lynn finished his tenure with back-to-back losing seasons, headlined by Philip Rivers' last year with the Bolts and Justin Herbert's first. In the latter, he infamously called Herbert a "backup for a reason".
Lynn's comments aged poorly and the weekly dysfunction didn't do him any favors. By the time his Chargers tenure was over, fans were ready to drive him to the airport just two years after he coached the last Chargers team to win a playoff game.
The former Chargers head coach has bounced around the NFL, starting with an offensive coordinator job in Detroit before taking smaller jobs in San Francisco and Washington. Now, five years after being let go by the Chargers, Lynn is a real candidate for one of the best head coaching jobs available.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Lynn is set to interview for the Buffalo Bills head coaching vacancy on Saturday. Before taking the Chargers job in 2017, Lynn was reportedly a finalist for the Bills job, which ultimately went to Sean McDermott.
Anthony Lynn might finally get another head coaching chance after Chargers debacle
Say what you will about Lynn, but it would be awesome to see the former Chargers head coach get another crack at being a head coach in the NFL.
Yes, it went about as poorly as it could have gone down the stretch. The Chargers won just five games in Rivers' last year and didn't see much more success in Herbert's forced rookie campaign. With a new quarterback and a new era at SoFi Stadium, it made all the sense in the world for the Chargers to move on at head coach.
But that shouldn't diminish what Lynn accomplished. Lynn coached the only Chargers team to win a playoff game in the decade in 2018. That's a fact. He led the team during the most important transition in franchise history from San Diego to Los Angeles and was tasked with leading them during an unprecedented global pandemic.
And throughout it all, he led with class. Lynn was always revered as a leader of men and was universally beloved by the fanbase before his final two seasons. Yes, they went poorly and Lynn deserves a lot of that blame, but he also coached some pretty terrible Chargers draft classes and was fighting uphill against extracurricular circumstances.
Lynn has the skillset to be a good head coach in this league. If he surrounds himself with the right coordinators, the Bills could be a dangerous football team with Josh Allen under center.
Just because Lynn didn't work for the Chargers doesn't mean he will never work out. And it also doesn't mean Chargers fans should be rooting against him getting another chance to prove his worth as an NFL head coach.
