The 2025 season is nearly upon us and as is the case in every NFL season, weird things are bound to happen. As one of the weirdest teams in the league, the LA Chargers will be front and center in the unpredictable.
While the NFL season breeds a lot of unpredictability, fans aren't totally in the dark. There are plenty of throughlines for the Chargers in 2025 that are leading fans and analysts to make similar predictions about the Bolts in 2025.
But what about the truly weird? What off-the-wall things may happen to the Chargers in 2025 that nobody else is predicting? Well, let's dive in.
Weird predictions for the Chargers' 2025 season:
1. Scott Matlock scores an offensive and defensive touchdown
Jim Harbaugh just has to do things differently. Instead of finding a tried and true fullback for the roster last season, Harbaugh converted second-year defensive tackle Scott Matlock to be a two-way player.
Matlock is the team's fullback once again in 2024 with a year of experience under his belt. Matlock didn't carry the ball at all last season and came away with four catches with no touchdowns. This year, that will change.
With another year of experience, Matlock is bound to get more chances and the law of averages point toward him finding the endzone at some point. Whether it be a short-yardage burst at the goalline or a reception in the flat, Matlock is destined for his first offensive touchdown.
Matlock still played over 100 defensive snaps last season and while it's a small sample size, it gives him a chance to score a defensive touchdown as well. Whether it be a big-man interception or a fumble recovery, we are hopeful Matlock can cement himself as the second-best two-way player behind Travis Hunter with a touchdown on both sides of the ball.
2. Trey Lance has a designed role on offense
It won't happen often because the last thing the Chargers need to do is hurt their backup quarterback but trotting him out there too frequently, but don't be surprised if Trey Lance has a designated role in the offense that is larger than fans expect.
Lance ran away with the backup quarterback job and looks the best he has in his entire career. He still isn't a gunslinger who is going to put the offense on his back, but his pocket presence has never been better, which plays well with his athleticism.
Greg Roman is used to coaching athletic quarterbacks at the NFL level and don't be surprised if the Chargers offensive coordinator sprinkles in some looks every now and again that utilizes Lance's athleticism. In fact, he may even score a touchdown this season.
3. Chargers go undefeated on the road
This is a weirdly optimistic prediction. Diehard Chargers fans may not think this prediction is weird at all as they are expecting a massive season for the Bolts in 2025. However, it is pretty rare for a team to go undefeated at home, especially when said team isn't among the upper echelon of NFL contenders.
But when you really break down the Chargers' road schedule you can see the vision on how the team can go undefeated as the visitors. It would take some wins in games they are underdogs, sure, but there are a lot of winnable games.
The Chargers' 2025 road games are as followed:
- Week 2: at Las Vegas Raiders
- Week 4: at New York Giants
- Week 6: at Miami Dolphins
- Week 9: at Tennessee Titans
- Week 11: at Jacksonville Jaguars
- Week 15: at Kansas City Chiefs
- Week 16: at Dallas Cowboys
- Week 18: at Denver Broncos
The biggest challenge is at Kansas City, which is at the crux of this prediction coming true. The Chargers will definitely be underdogs in this game but they can beat the Chiefs at Arrowhead. They have done it before.
At Denver in Week 18 is also bound to be a tough test but that game may not mean anything. Both teams may end up playing the backups, which favors the Chargers with a better head coach and more depth. It would truly be weird, though, if the Bolts needed the backups for this prediction to come true.
Outside of those two games, the Chargers don't have many really tough challenges on the road. Some teams are bound to be surprises, sure, but this isn't necessarily a murderer's row of difficult places to play.
