LA Chargers: 3 reasons why the Bolts shouldn’t be done in free agency
By Jason Reed
It is July with minicamp officially passed and training camp right around the corner. After signing some big names back in March, it appears that the LA Chargers are undoubtedly done spending in the free-agent market before the 2021 season.
While it would not be surprising if the Bolts were done spending because of the nature of the team, it makes more practical sense for the Chargers to make at least one more free-agent signing before the 2021 season.
It is hard to complain about who the team has already brought in this offseason. Tom Telesco and co. have put together a solid offseason. But that does not mean they should settle. If there is a means to improve this late in the calendar then they must take it. Every time.
3 reasons why the LA Chargers shouldn’t be done spending in free agency:
1. The LA Chargers want to win now
If the LA Chargers were a team that was accepting a rebuild then we would not be having this conversation. Every NFL team convinces itself that it is good enough to win the Super Bowl and while downright terrible teams are few and far between, there are teams that know they are in a different position than the Chargers.
Those teams are not going to spend this late in free agency. They are going to be more interested in developing the young players on the roster and that could keep the team from signing free agents to cut into that playing time.
That is not the situation the Chargers are in. With Justin Herbert under center, all the talent around him and the new coaching staff in LA, the Chargers are looking to win. Tom Telesco is on his third head coach. It is rare to get that many chances at a head coach, and if there is anyone that needs to be urgent, it is him.
That does not mean the team should spend recklessly but that is not what this is.
