Positions to be concerned about on the LA Chargers roster: Safety

Derwin James is a fantastic football player and in the one lone season that he was fully healthy he was named an All-Pro… which was his rookie season, nonetheless. There is no denying that James is a talented safety, with the important question being if he can stay healthy.

Injuries happen to everyone and you cannot blame a player for suffering a freak injury. However, at some point, the injuries become a trend and you get slapped with the injury-prone moniker. If Charger fans want to call Hunter Henry injury-prone then James deserves the same treatment.

James’ injury history dates back to college, so it is absolutely okay to be concerned about his ability to stay healthy in 2021. Even if he is healthy, though, there is more to be concerned about.

There is no depth at the position and the Chargers are really going all-in on the hope that Staley can turn around Nasir Adderley. Adderley has been awful in his career thus far but to be fair to him, he dealt with injuries his rookie season and then was thrown into a defensive system that did not suit his playing style with no real preseason last year.

If both safeties stay healthy and play to the best of their ability then they will be fantastic. If one gets hurt then the depth of the position will be quickly exposed and if James gets hurt and Adderley is the same guy from last year then the secondary is in deep trouble.
