4. Do K.J. Hill and/or Joe Reed even make the LA Chargers roster?
Just a little over one year ago, fifth-round pick Joe Reed was thought to be a future swiss army knife weapon/special teams contributor. Seventh-round pick K.J. Hill was the perceived steal of the 2020 NFL Draft. With five wideouts having roster spots virtually locked up, it’s legitimately possible that neither makes the roster.
They’re not even necessarily guaranteed to be the last two competing for that sixth receiver spot. XFL standout Austin Proehl, Jason Moore, and Spring League standout Michael Bandy are around. This new coaching staff wasn’t responsible for drafting Reed or Hill either.
Reed does have special teams value in addition to some versatility a WR/RB weapon as mentioned before. Last year’s coaching staff seemed to think that his route running skills needed some development, which led to a lack of playing time. Joe Lombardi’s quote about him lining up in the right spots was also…less than a glowing review.
Perhaps somebody like Hill can continue to grow as a slot receiver, but there’s less of a need for that specific skillset on this team when Austin Ekeler lines up in the slot fairly often in addition to more talented receivers. Reed probably has a slight edge over the field strictly due to special teams contributions, but the sixth spot on the roster really seems to be for the taking.
