LA Chargers Super Bowl pillar 2: A star defensive player that can pressure the quarterback

This is a quarterback’s league and there are two keys to beating every single team in the NFL: have a quarterback that can put points on the board and have a defense that can stop the other quarterback.

While elite members of the secondary obviously help, the best way to stop a quarterback is by pressuring them. Just look at Patrick Mahomes in the Super Bowl. The offensive line was in pieces and the Bucs capitalized.

Generating organic pressure on the quarterback is a massive part of any team’s success and leading the way is typically a star pass rusher. Tampa Bay had several players who were all great and they benefitted from a bad offensive line. Most times, the Super Bowl-winning teams have great defensive linemen.

The Chiefs had Frank Clark and Chris Jones, the 49ers had Joey Bosa and their terrifying front seven, the Eagles had the best defensive line in football, the Rams had Aaron Donald, and of course, the Patriots defense was always among the best in the league.

The Chargers have that star that can lead the front seven in Joey Bosa, who is already one of the best edge rushers in the league and he arguably has not even hit his peak. If Derwin James can stay healthy and improves from his rookie season then watch out.
