Why the LA Chargers will double-dip at cornerback in 2021 NFL Draft
By Jason Reed
The LA Chargers have to get more than just an outside corner
The biggest need in the cornerback room is a bonafide outside cornerback who can start in year one for the LA Chargers. If the season were to start today, the Chargers would have Brandon Facyson as the second outside starting cornerback.
That would be a terrible outlook. I don’t mind Facyson as the CB4 who comes in sparingly, but having him be the second outside corner alongside Michael Davis would be extremely baffling. That is why outside corner is such a big need.
That is not the only need though. The Chargers should also be honing in on a versatile corner, a swiss-army knife of sorts. These types of players are more obtainable later in the draft (look at Desmond King) and that is exactly what the LA Chargers should be looking to do.
Get a cornerback who can mostly play the slot but can move around the defense if need be. It would be extremely short-sided for the Chargers to not take someone who can play the slot both now and in the future.
Chris Harris is going to be spending most of his time in the slot this season but he is only under contract for one more year. Plus, he was not that good last year and there is always the chance of injury.
The Bolts not only have to prepare for next season when Harris is gone, but they need a security blanket because of his age. There is no point in waiting. Get someone in the building now that Staley can begin to mold and if all goes as planned, can start in 2022.
