LA Chargers: 3 offensive free agents that could still help LA
By Jason Reed
3. Alex Smith
Alex Smith probably wants to be a starting quarterback somewhere but that does not look like it is going to happen. If Smith was going to get a starting role he would have already gotten it by now and former Charger Tyrod Taylor has cornered the Houston job in case of a Deshaun Watson trade.
It does not appear as if Russell Wilson is going to be traded, the Chicago Bears found Andy Dalton, Dak Prescott returned to the Dallas Cowboys and we already have an idea on which teams are going to be taking quarterbacks in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Factor in that Sam Darnold, who is much younger, could become available and it is clear that there just is not a path to start for Smith.
So he should commit to being a backup quarterback and he won’t be a backup quarterback that costs a premier contract. That makes him very enticing for the LA Chargers.
I know there are Easton Stick fans out there and I get it, but it just does not make sense to have Stick be the primary backup. I am fine with him coming into a game if Justin Herbert gets hurt. The season will be done for if Herbert is out for a significant time, anyways.
It has nothing to do with who would be the better option (although that still is Smith), it has everything to do with the experience that Smith would bring to the quarterbacks room. Tyrod Taylor brought that experience last year and having a veteran quarterback to lean on can be hugely beneficial to a young quarterback.
Patrick Mahomes himself said that Alex Smith is a special human being. There may not be anyone in the league better suited to be a veteran backup and teach Justin Herbert the ins and outs of an NFL defense than Alex Smith.
