The LA Chargers should pursue Ricardo Allen

This is contingent on Rayshawn Jenkins’ situation this offseason. If Jenkins re-signs with the team then there is no point whatsoever in pursuing Ricardo Allen. However, if Jenkins has priced himself out of LA then Allen could be a good backup option to play the free safety position alongside Derwin James.

Nasir Adderley is kind of entering a do-or-die year in terms of his role with the team. If he does not take that leap to at least be an average NFL free safety in year three then it is probably time to admit that he won’t pan out.

That is not to say that he won’t pan out in 2021, but having full faith in him to man the free safety position after how bad he played last season is setting the secondary up to fail. Getting a veteran like Allen not only for depth but to split snaps with Adderley could be hugely beneficial.

Allen has not been all that great the last two seasons but prior to getting hurt, he was in an upper tier of NFL free safeties. While his best years are likely behind him, if he could be 90% of what he was 3-4 years ago then that would be a huge addition for the LA Chargers.

All for a minuscule price as well. Ricardo Allen certainly is worth pursuing and if the cards fall right he could very well end up in powder blue.
