LA Chargers: 5 best free agency fits for Tyrod Taylor
By Jason Reed
Best fits for LA Chargers quarterback Tyrod Taylor: 3. New England Patriots
It is unclear what the New England Patriots are going to do at the quarterback position this offseason. Cam Newton was not good and should not be brought back if the team wants to win. However, the Pats were not bad enough with Cam under center to get a high draft pick and ensure a top-tier quarterback.
The Patriots pick 15th in the 2021 NFL Draft, which might be high enough to snag someone such as Trey Lance, but even that is questionable. They could trade up, but Bill Belichick is not the type to spend draft capital to move up in the draft. He often does the contrary.
There are some interesting options that the team could explore. Jameis Winston will be a free agent and there is always going to be the run line of Belichick reuniting with Jimmy Garoppolo. Watson is a fun hypothetical for Patriot fans, but I just do not see the Pats sending the required capital to get Watson.
If the Patriots are simply going to commit to continuing rebuilding while also being competitive then someone like Taylor would be perfect. The Pats could run a similar offense with Taylor as they did with Cam and Taylor won’t make the same number of mistakes as Cam, as he is better at protecting the football.
Taylor can actually throw the ball downfield and if there is anyone in the league who can maximize Taylor and help him return to his Pro Bowl form it is Belichick. For Taylor, this is probably the best career move, as it could land him a starting job after the 2021 season.
Only time will tell what the Patriots want to do at quarterback but I would be extremely surprised if Tyrod turned down the job if it was offered.
