28. Alex Smith, Washington Football Team

  • Average ranking: 27.86
  • Highest ranking: 26
  • Preseason ranking: N/A

Alex Smith is officially the starting quarterback of the Washington Football Team after Kyle Allen suffered an unfortunate leg injury. Of course, we are all worried about Smith’s surgically repaired leg but he looks ready to go and slanged the ball all around the field in Week 9.

He did throw three interceptions, but he is more poised and has a higher ceiling than some of these other quarterbacks.

27. Cam Newton, New England Patriots

  • Average ranking: 27.86
  • Highest ranking: 25
  • Preseason ranking: 25

Cam Newton had the same average ranking as Alex Smith but since he had a better higher ranking he gets the tiebreaker.

Cam started the season off on a really good note and was on pace to probably crack the top-20 on this list. However, he has not been good since and actually finds himself falling two spots from where he was before the season.

Also, this is an important note: Tyrod Taylor ranked 27th in our preseason rankings.

26. Nick Mullens, San Francisco 49ers

  • Average ranking: 26.83
  • Highest ranking: 26
  • Preseason ranking: N/A

Nick Mullens is an interesting case as his highest ranking is also where he ranks on our list. Mullens either checked in at 26th or 27th on our rankings and did not have the extremely low ranking that everyone else on this list had at least one of.

Mullens is one of the better backup quarterbacks in the NFL. Ranking 26th as a starter is not bad at all.

25. Gardner Minshew

  • Average ranking: 25.71
  • Highest ranking: 24
  • Preseason ranking: 31

This was an interesting one as Jake Lutton started in place of an injured Minshew in Week 9 and will start for the team again in Week 10. Lutton was pretty solid and could play his way into the starting role.

However, for now, we are under the assumption that Minshew is still the starter and he checks in at 25th.
