LA Chargers: Free agent options not named Earl Thomas or Jahleel Addae
By Jason Reed
2. Eric Reid
The options for the LA Chargers outside of Tony Jefferson are not that great, hence why someone like Earl Thomas would be a good pickup for the team. You can definitely make the case for Addae not being a great option either (and I would not argue with you) but at the very least he at least has experience and familiarity with the team.
That is not something that Eric Reid has and like Addae, many would not view him as a good option. Reid was so bad for the Carolina Panthers last season and that is the reason why he is without a job despite only being 28.
Reid had a 46.6 overall grade on Pro Football Focus last season. For those that are not familiar with the PFF grading metrics, that is really, really bad. To be fair, there was one silver lining, as he had a 72.3 grade in the pass rush.
You could make the case that the Chargers would get the most out of Reid and that is probably true. We have seen guys like Tre Boston come to LA and thrive in the past and Reid’s good years are not that far behind him. As a veteran strong safety backup, it would not be the end of the world.
The case for Reid over Addae would be that the ceiling is higher with Reid and that absolutely is true. However, I would still take Addae over Reid any day of the week just because of his familiarity with the team.
I would still take Earl Thomas over them both, though. On to the third and final option.
