FB Gabe Nabers vs. FB Bobby Holly

In the domain that is LA Chargers Twitter, this may be the most talked about position battle. The Chargers are going to keep one fullback with the potential of placing the other on the practice squad. Reports so far indicate that the coaching staff has been impressed with both Gabe Nabers and Bobby Holly.

Holly is your standard NFL fullback. He’s got tons of strength and can barrel his way down the field as a blocker. Holly might make sense for a team like the Chargers, who will lean on the running game more than they have in previous seasons.

Nabers on the other hand is more of a jack of all trades type of option. At Florida State, he actually converted to tight end as a blocker and receiver. He can block about as effectively as Holly, but doesn’t quite have the same force.

At the same time, Holly can’t match Nabers’ athleticism that could be used in the receiving game and on special teams.

What could separate Nabers from Holly is ultimately that versatility. The Chargers love having players who are able to be used in multiple ways. If Nabers can truly line up out wide, in the b gap, behind the quarterback, or in the slot, that’s a lot of options for receiving and blocking.

If the Chargers want a more physical fullback in the style of Le’Ron McClain, Holly is the guy. My hunch is that this coaching staff could value Nabers’ more dynamic athleticism though.

Winner: Gabe Nabers
