LA Chargers’ last-minute free agent target: WR Taylor Gabriel

Taylor Gabriel was a receiver that I thought made a lot of sense in free agency. Seemingly, he hasn’t gotten much interest and is on the outside looking in for the NFL’s 2020 season.

Due to the K.J. Hill and Joe Reed draft picks, I don’t think the Chargers will come very close to acquiring another receiver. If they are interested though, Gabriel wouldn’t be a bad fit. The Chargers have some speed with Reed, but he’s probably not getting that many snaps in his first season as a receiver. A lot of them will probably come on special teams.

Gabriel is a good slot receiver with enough speed and route running prowess to open up things for other receivers. The Chargers might get some great development out of Hill and Reed, but Gabriel is a more of a sure thing if he’s on a one year deal.

Perhaps the Chargers trust Andre Patton more than I do, but he has quite a few drops last year and never established himself as the third receiver behind Keenan Allen and Mike Williams.

It’s not a necessity, but it would be a good move to bolster the depth of a receiver group that is currently relying heavily on the development of Patton, Hill, and Reed.

Dareus would bring some much-needed strength to the trenches for a Chargers team that needs a little more help there. Elliott and Williams are very intriguing secondary options who still have room to grow and develop. Gabriel is a bonafide starting receiver that isn’t getting enough love as a slot receiver in free agency.
