2. It will be harder for the Kansas City Chiefs to build a complete roster

Let’s look back at the most successful teams in recent years. The Chiefs had Mahomes on his rookie contract last season, Tom Brady took a pay cut to add talent to the Patriots, Carson Wentz was on his rookie contract, Jared Goff was on his rookie contract, Russell Wilson was on his rookie contract.

Of course, there is an exception to this, but the true gold mine to strike in the NFL is to find a quarterback who is good enough to lead the team to the Super Bowl while in his rookie contract. That way, the team can properly surround said quarterback with weapons, as they will have more salary-cap space.

That is going to be harder for the Kansas City Chiefs to manage moving forward. We are already seeing the impact of this in 2020, as Chris Jones has stated that he will not play under the franchise tag and wants a new contract.

Travis Kelce, Sammy Watkins, Damien Williams, Tyrann Mathieu and almost the entire offensive line are going to be free agents over the next two years.

Some of that talent is going to be re-signed but the team is going to have to figure out the balancing act of who to keep and who not to keep.

Drafting becomes extremely important for the Kansas City Chiefs in the next several years. However, I would be wary of being too excited over the Chiefs not being able to sign free agents as they have been really good at drafting.

It is not a guarantee that this contract will hinder the talent around Patrick Mahomes, but it will absolutely make it more difficult for the Kansas City Chiefs.

That is something to hold onto if you are an LA Chargers fan that is not excited about facing Mahomes for the next 12 years.
