LA Chargers: “Steal a player” series — AFC East edition
By Jason Reed
From the New England Patriots, the LA Chargers steal…
There is nobody that you could pick from the New England Patriots over Stephon Gilmore. Sure, there are still some very talented players on the defensive side of the ball in New England, but Gilmore is the reigning Defensive Player of the Year and is the reason why we did not pick White from Buffalo.
Gilmore had an incredible 2019 season that led to the honor. He led the league in passes defended with 20 and interceptions with six, had two defensive touchdowns, 53 total tackles and did not miss a single game while playing in 95 percent of the snaps.
The Chargers did already bolster the cornerback group with Chris Harris this offseason and adding Gilmore would be the icing on the cake. While all of them are somewhat up there in age (at least as far as the NFL is concerned), a trio of Gilmore, Casey Hayward and Harris would be unstoppable.
Gilmore and Hayward out wide would be as good as it possibly can get and while Harris is not the same player he was a few years ago, as a full-time slot corner he would be one of the best in the business.
Gilmore turns 30 in September, which would make them all on the wrong side of 30, but the results for at least the next year or two would be elite. You think the Patriots’ secondary was elite with Gilmore? This would be next level.
