Free agent with ties to the LA Chargers: OT Marshall Newhouse

Connection to the LA Chargers: James Campen

Even if Peters is not in the equation for the LA Chargers, it would benefit the team to bring in some sort of veteran depth in free agency in case of an emergency. While Sam Tevi and Trent Scott have experience with the team, this is going to be an entirely new team and getting a veteran with experience, especially with the coaching staff, could be big.

A cheap option that certainly would not restrict the team’s salary cap in any way would be Marshall Newhouse. Newhouse is a nine-year veteran of the league that began his career on the Green Bay Packers under the Chargers’ new offensive line coach, James Campen.

Newhouse’s career has had its ups and down. In some years he has looked like a really solid, above-average tackle that would start on almost any offensive line. In other years, the mistakes piled up and he did not look all that great.

Last year he started nine games for the New England Patriots and was serviceable. He was not great but as a backup tackle that was forced to come in, he certainly did his part.

The Chargers are not going to get an elite player for depth purposes but getting a veteran that could help aid someone like Pipkins while also providing experience as a backup would be great for the Chargers.
