Chargers battle to watch: Cardale Jones vs Easton Stick

Guess who leads the Chargers in passer rating? Not Tyrod Taylor, and certainly not Easton Stick; it’s Cardale Jones, with a rating of 110.0. Who lost money on that bet?

Jones had the best game of his entire NFL career on Sunday, which now puts immense pressure on Stick. Though it’s unlikely the team would draft a quarterback in the fifth round and cut him so quickly, it would be hard to keep him on the practice squad, let alone active roster, if Jones is simply playing better than he is. In 2014, Tom Telesco cut both is sixth and seventh round selection before the season began; could the fifth-round pick be next?

Chargers battle to watch: Brandon Facyson vs Jeff Richards

Without Trevor Williams (not practicing), there’s room for either of these corners to step up and make the active roster. The problem: Neither of them are doing much so far.

Both Facyson and Richards have six combined tackles, no interceptions, and no passes defended. Against the Saints, the Chargers defense (while not entirely the fault of Facyson and Richards) gave up 136 yards and two touchdowns to Taysom Hill.

On Saturday, both will have the chance to play against Paxton Lynch and Geno Smith, two quarterbacks the Chargers are familiar with in different ways. Can one of these corners finally step up and do something positive?
