The Chargers were one of four Twitter poll options asking which NFL team had the best secondary. They won!
The Chargers were entered into a Twitter poll and they won; let that one sink in. This, despite the (laughable) notion that no Chargers fans exist in the world.
Time to settle this. Based on your responses, we've narrowed it down to 4.
Which NFL team has the best secondary? ?
— FOX Sports: NFL (@NFLonFOX) May 16, 2019
It’s hard to argue against a secondary that has:
- Former 2x Pro-Bowl corner Casey Hayward
- Current Pro-Bowl and First Team All-Pro S Derwin James
- Current First-Team All-Pro DB Desmond King
- Current Pro-Bowl and First-Team All-Pro S Adrian Phillips (ST)
- PFF’s highest-graded safety Nasir Adderley
- PFF’s No. 36 ranked CB Michael Davis
- Former PFF Top-15 CB Trevor Williams
When Casey Hayward could be argued as the fifth-best defensive back on the roster, that’s quite the elite secondary.
Under the guidance of long-time defensive backs coach Ron Milus, the Chargers have had six consecutive years of Pro-Bowl corners or safeties, this past year sending two to the Pro-Bowl and having three elected as First Team All-Pros. With the addition of Adderley, the return of Williams, and the development of Davis, the Bolts will once again boast one of the best secondaries in the entire league. Clearly, fans of all teams agree.
What’s more, the Chargers’ secondary will have the chance to look even better with first and seventh round draft picks Jerry Tillery and Cortez Broughton between Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram, who will undoubtedly help create turnovers on errant throws.
The Chargers winning any kind of poll that requires a fan vote is staggering, especially on the heels of a “Who has the best fan base?” poll in which the Bolts got obliterated. Does them winning this glorious title mean much? Not really. But come Week 1 of this season, the Chargers’ secondary can prove why they truly are the best in the NFL.
