Derwin James is going to be a superstar in the NFL at the strong safety position, but who can the Chargers get that won’t be a liability due to their tackling technique?

We need an impactful, instinctive ballhawk as a center fielder and I am going to give my take on who the Chargers can sign, trade for and/or draft at the free safety position to upgrade a position of weakness for the Bolts.

Free agent option

Since we are over a quarter into the NFL regular season, the free agency pool isn’t flooded with options at starter, especially at a highly desired position such as free safety. But there is an option that can be appealing to the Chargers in Jairus Byrd.

Yes, Byrd is past his prime, but he is one of the only safeties available that has experience being a single-high safety, and one of the best in his prime at that.

If we were ever to bring in Byrd, it would probably be for a single season as this isn’t a long-term solution, this is to help the Chargers win now and as of right now we do not have a capable single-high free safety.

Byrd has the experience and what player wouldn’t come back if it means contending for a Super Bowl? Byrd is a sure tackler that has the willingness to come down hard and make the open-field tackle. He also reads the field wonderfully and though he may have lost a step or two, his ability to read the offense and quarterback to be in the right spot at the right time and make a play can’t be understated.

This team is desperate for a playmaker in the center of the field. Byrd may not be the best option, but it’s an option worth exploring or at least bringing him in for a visit.
