Before each game I will be covering three players that need to perform well to help the Chargers come out on top. This week the Chargers face the Denver Broncos.
This game has serious season implications. Not only is sweeping a rival important huge, let alone the Defending Super bowl Champions, the remaining season consists of only three teams with a record over .500. The Chargers could find themselves in the playoff hunt after all. In order for that to happen here are players who need to preform big against the Denver Broncos.
OT Joe Barksdale
Two weeks ago I placed Joe Barksdale at the top of this list. I am doing it again. Barksdale is going up against Von Miller. Two weeks ago Barksdale held Miller in check for most of the game, however last week against the Falcons Barksdale had one of his worst performances as a Charger. There is no time to get back up to speed. Barksdale needs to get in form right away if Philip Rivers has any hope of throwing the ball.
ILB Denzel Perryman
CJ Anderson is out, for how long is up for debate, but one thing is sure he won’t be facing the Chargers. Anderson is a good running back, his backup, Devontae Booker, is a rookie. Booker has shown flashes at times, but also has shown to be fresh to the NFL like most rookies are. Denzel Perryman should take advantage. With Broncos quarterback Trevor Siemian having his fair share of struggles this season shutting down the run game could be key to stopping the Broncos offense. To list a single player
WR Isiah Burse
Both Tyrell Williams and Travis Benjamin are listed as questionable to play against the Broncos. Isiah Burse has been added to the roster from the practice squad. Burse showed ability during preseason but never had a chance to go up against starting caliber corners for an extensive amount of time. The Broncos corners are some of the best in the league. This will be a huge test for Burse to see if he can be relied on the rest of the season if need be. Out of the pan and into the fire.
Extra Credit
RB Melvin Gordon
Chargers might find it difficult getting the passing game going given all the injuries at wide receiver. Melvin Gordon will have to step up in a huge way to alleviate the passing game by running over a strong defense.
TE Hunter Henry
Hunter Henry is listed as questionable to play. If he does he might be the most reliable pass catcher for Philip Rivers on Sunday. Hunter Henry scored against the Broncos two weeks ago showing poise against solid opposition. A similar performance will be necessary for a win in Denver.
CB Brandon Flowers
Brandon Flowers could capitalize on the Chargers front seven pressuring Trevor Siemian. Flowers could find an interception or two headed his way Sunday. That will make for a warm welcome back after being out with a concussion, that is for sure.
