Here is a quick prediction on the San Diego Chargers final 53 man roster before the team makes their final cuts.
Quarterbacks (2)
Philip Rivers, Kellen Clemens
I know that people want to cut Kellen Clemens. I understand why people would want to do that. HE SUCKS! He didn’t do anything in the preseason, but if Philip were to go down, I am sure that Tom Telesco would rather trust in the veteran over the younger Brad Sorensen. If Philip goes down, we pretty much are screwed anyway.
Runningbacks (4)
Melvin Gordon, Danny Woodhead, Branden Oliver, Donald Brown
Donald Brown? Why would we keep Donald Brown? This is a simple pride issue for Tom Telesco. Brown will be the highest paid back on the rsoter, but will be 4th on the depth chart. If any of the guys were to go down, Brown would be a decent option to fill in.
Wide Receivers (6)
Malcom Floyd, Keenan Allen, Stevie Johnson, Dontrelle Inman, Jacoby Jones, Javontee Herndon
A lot of peeople would like to see Herndon take the return role over Jacoby Jones based on the preseason performance. Do we remember how good Jones is? Do we remember why we signed that guy? Our return game has been awful for years and we signed one of the premiere returners in the game, but then we are going to drop him right on his butt because of the preseason? You keep Jones on the roster and keep Herndon around for the future. The biggest question will be Tyrell Williams. How do we sneak him onto the practice squad?
Tight Ends (3)
Antonio Gates, Ladarius Green, David Johnson, John Phillips
Gates won’t count against the 53 man roster until he is off his suspension. The team will roll with Green as the starter and Johnson is used as the fullback and blocking tight end on the roster. Will the team keep John Phillips or Kyle Miller for the last tight end spot?
Offensive Line (8)
King Dunlap, Joe Barksdale, Chris Watt, DJ Fluker, Orlando Franklin, Trevor Robinson, Jeremiah Sirles, Chris Hairston
Johnnie Troutman might be placed on the IR. We don’t know what the team is going to do with him at this point. Will the team decide to go with 9 linemen or 8? With all the versatility up front with the starters, I believe they will go with 8.
Defensive Line (7)
Corey Liuget, Kendall Reyes, Sean Lissemore, Ryan Carrethers, Mitch Unrein, Darius Philon, Ricardo Mathews
No real surprises for this unit. The young guys will see a lot of action and Kendall Reyes needs to get pushed further down on the bench.
Outisde Linebackers (6)
Melvin Ingram, Jerry Attaochu, Kyle Emanuel, Cordarro Law, Ryan Mueller, Colton Underwood
With all the injuries at this position in the past, we might need to keep an extra man around. Is Tourek Williams going to make it back this season? There has not been much news on him.
Inside Linebackers (5)
Donald Butler, Manti Te’o, Kavell Conner, Denzel Perryman, Nick Dzunbar
Nick Dzunbar showed all-out hustle during the preseason and stole a job from someone with his effort.
Cornerbacks (5)
Brandon Flowers, Jason Verrett, Patrick Robinson, Craig Mager, Steve Williams
I wish there that the depth was better here, but I am sure every other team thinks the same. Mager and Williams scare me if they have to see any extended action.
Safety (4)
Eric Weddle, Jahleel Addae, Darrell Stuckey, Jimmy Wilson
Special Teams (3)
Nick Novak, Mike Scifres, Mike Windt
