How it was made: Chargers roster- Drafted vs Undrafted

With so much pressure placed on teams to rebuild and fill rosters through the draft, I wanted to breakdown just how the current Chargers roster was made. Below you will see a list of players drafted by San Diego alongside a long list of players whom the Chargers kept as a undrafted free agents. With names like future Hall of Fame tight end Antonio Gates going undrafted, there is proof that talent can fall through the cracks. However, needless to say, the early rounds of the draft are where you find a consistent flow of franchise players like Eric Weddle, Nick Hardwick and Corey Liuget. With so many holes in this years roster to fill, the importance of the scouting process for both drafted and undrafted talents couldn’t be stressed enough. Free agency is an option to fill some of those holes with veteran leadership, but the price tag that comes along with high profile free agents quickly puts a team in a salary cap crunch. Keep in mind, the Chargers are known to be relatively quiet in free agency with Danny Woodhead and Brandon Flowers being some of the biggest names added in recent history.

*Fun Fact: 12 of the 33 players drafted by San Diego since 2010 are not on the current roster. 2 of the 6 players drafted in 2014 aren’t on roster.

*Note: Philip Rivers is not listed in the drafted because he was not drafted by San Diego, but originally to the New York Giants before being traded for.
