Are the Chargers Still In Need of A Safety?

The topic of discussion for drafting a safety in the draft has picked up at Bolt Beat. Jahleel Addae is the top safety candidate on the roster to start and really doesn’t have much competition for the job. He finished off the season playing a majority of the snaps at the strong safety and took the job away from Marcus Gilchrist. If we don’t pick anyone up in the draft or free agency, then Addae will be the starter opposite of Eric Weddle.

He will be the newest starter opposite of Eric Weddle. We all know that has been a merry-go-round position for the team since Rodney Harrison was cut loose. It has been an Achilles heal for a long time. Eric Weddle has been great at his position, but he has no stability next to him.

Every season, there is a top safety that is available in the draft that could be a good option for the Chargers to pick up and we decide to pass on him or he gets picked up before we even get our shot. We likely wouldn’t have picked him up anyway. Last season it was Kenny Vaccaro. Before that it was Mark Barron. Who is it this year?

The top safety in this draft class isn’t quite as clear cut. Calvin Pryor and Deone Bucannon have been mentioned among the guys on the site, but the player that stands out to me is Hasean Clinton-Dix.

First off, we all know Telesco has a fetish for funny names. How funny is the name Clinton-Dix? Secondly, he prefers to be called HaHa. Can’t get funnier than that.

For real though, Clinton-Dix comes from the same program that brought us D.J. Fluker. Alabama knows how to produce talent. Clinton-Dix is always around the football and he would be awesome paired up next to Eric Weddle. Clinton-Dix is not your prototype strong safety though and would likely be considered a free safety, but it doesn’t even matter.

Add another playmaker in the secondary and we will be better off because of it. We can debate on which safety is best to pick up, but we should all agree that safety is still a need for this team. Even with Addae on the roster, there is nobody behind him that is worth a lick that should be starting back there.

Who would your choice for safety be in the draft? Pryor? Clinton-Dix? Bucannon?
